Posted on Friday 18th June, 2021
Mathew Lamont is a twenty-two year old surf kayaker from Northern Ireland. He's been kayaking for eleven years and has also won several British and Irish titles at both junior and senior level.
Hometown
Dungannon.
Where did you last paddle?
My last surf was at a sunny, Irish reef break and my last time on the water was on the Tryweryn in North Wales.
What are your best paddling memories?
One of my favourite sessions was a surf in the lead up to the Peru world championships with friendly chest high waves and only one other person on the water. A really good day and one that I still remember vividly.
Where should everybody go paddling once?
The Irish open is one of my favourite events, held in September on Easky left, one of my favourite breaks and a fantastic atmosphere. I'd really recommend people come complete there at least once.
What else do you like to do when you’re not out paddling?
I'm a keen cyclist both on and off road. So keen that I'm currently cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats. I'm also really into climbing when I can.
What’s your best advice for other paddlers?
Try as many displines of paddling as you can, as they're all likely to improve your skills. Also try and enter a competition at least once as it's a great way to meet up with other like minded paddlers and a fantastic way to improve.
What are your favourite bits of kit?
I've just got a set of two-piece Aircore Pro paddles from VE which I really like and I'm looking to being able to travel abroad with them. I also use some fantastic kayaks, the Engima and Fusion, made by Hobson kayaks and I love using the Peak ST topdecks for their extra range of motion..
What is left on your list of places to go?
I'd love to do a surf trip to Indonesia and Morocco at some point.
Describe your perfect day on the water?
A long, powerful left hand wave with plenty of potential for critical surfing on the wave face and a powerful end section to launch some airs. Sunny skies, blue water and good friends to share the water with.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
I can't wait for the autumn competition's to start running and I'm really looking forward to meeting up with other surfers again soon.
